Roll Walker by UNI-UM is a new assistive device designed to help older adults live safely at home. In Korea, falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults, with over 74% occurring indoors. However, many seniors hesitate to use traditional walking aids due to the stigma associated with them, viewing them as a “symbol of frailty.” This project aims to challenge this perception by reimagining the walker as a stylish, multifunctional household item rather than a medical device.
Its versatile design—usable as a chair, table, or cart—together with wooden materials suited to Korean homes and a simple design, allows users to maintain dignity and autonomy in daily life. The most important social outcome that Roll Walker aims to achieve is to bring about a new perspective on the value of “dignified ageing.”
By positioning itself as a lifestyle item rather than medical equipment, Roll Walker reshapes intergenerational perceptions, broadens social consensus around inclusive design, and influences both policy discussions and consumer expectations. Having undergone field interviews, pilot operations in welfare centers, and expert consultations, the project is now ready for CAD-based mass production.
Its modular design also enables adaptation to diverse cultures and living environments, offering a scalable solution for the rapidly growing elderly population worldwide. Roll Walker is helping to create a more safe, dignified, and socially inclusive future for older adults in sustainable ways in the ageing societies.
