This project for small- and medium-scale potato farmers in rural Colombia goes beyond merely introducing new farming technology. It aims to transform farmers’ lives and strengthen the fabric of village communities. Developed through direct dialogue, feedback, and field testing with farmers, the Agrow digital platform supports daily farming decisions through an easy-to-use mobile interface and a WhatsApp-based virtual assistant. Its initial features — learning guides, real-time support, and project progress tracking — were primarily based on farmers’ feedback and practical farming needs.
Agrow provides immediate assistance with challenges such as pest control, planting and harvesting schedules, and fertilizer and pesticide use. It also delivers personalized knowledge through online learning and crop management tools. In partnership with local traders and government programs, the project has established a rewards system that supplies seeds, tools, and protective equipment at affordable prices, encouraging farmers to consistently practice sustainable agriculture. This produces positive effects, such as, stabilizing yields and income, securing long-term food security, and protecting soil and water resources.
As knowledge sharing expands, farmers increasingly learn from one another, creating strong peer-to-peer networks. The platform also opens new opportunities for women and young people, thereby enhancing social inclusion.
Agrow is more than a tool for raising income in the agricultural economies: it ensures farmers are respected as equal members of society while boosting community self-reliance and resilience. Its affordable, user-friendly design with locally tailored features makes it adaptable to different agricultural contexts worldwide. Because it has been developed through continuous engagement with real users, making its feasibility high. Strategic partnerships with local suppliers and public programs further reinforce the sustainability of its rewards system.
