The judges of the Seoul Design Award 2024 are experts in various fields such as Universal Design, Industrial Design, Architecture, Urban Planning, and Art. People with different nationalities, backgrounds, and areas of expertise work together to discover great works. The advisory committee members are also experts in various fields such as design, environment, and sustainability, and they are here at Seoul Design Award 2024 to discuss ways to operate the award better
Recently, the judges and advisors of the Seoul Design Award gathered together. The purpose was to open the door to the 2024 Seoul Design Award and discuss its future together.
In particular, the judges and advisors shared their thoughts on what design can do along with the future direction of the Seoul Design Award. What do you think is a good design? Here, we share some important stories in the conversations between the judges and advisors during the meeting.

A better world created by the infinite possibilities of designs

The creative approach and diversity of designers have a huge impact on the way we use our resources and the products and services we deliver. The Seoul Design Award goes beyond simply looking at projects to look at the impact the project's design holds, which is especially important.

According to a report from the European Commission, 80% of a product's environmental impact is determined at the design stage. This statistic simply suggests that designs can make the world better or worse. In other words, designers must think together about their responsibilities and roles for a sustainable future.

Designers are becoming social advocates on sustainability issues and ecological issues. We also provide education to others through design. Within the designing process, we need to think about whether it can be integrated and expanded with other fields. The role of designers will become more important in the future. Pradyumna Vyas ⎸ President-Elect, World Design Organization (WDO)
\Because design can even “design” people’s behavior, it is able to make society more harmonious and bring about innovation in products, services, and systems. Innovation plays a central role in bringing about social change. Going forward, our key role will be to create a more inclusive society and use design to create a better world.

We believe that design plays an important role in a sustainable future. Therefore, when looking at design, we must have a comprehensive perspective. In the end, I think we need to care about both environmental and economic sustainability.

How can design change your life? This is the area where design does not exist: decision-making. I don't think it's right to think that technology will solve everything. After the decision was made, the design was accepted. So, good decisions will create a sustainable future. I believe that the Seoul Design Award can play a role in promoting design as a culture in organization, strategy, and planning.

We need to know exactly what a sustainable daily life is. Sustainability must also include harmony. This means ‘coexistence’. Sustainability also means ‘equality’. When trying to promote sustainability, it makes no sense to address the inequalities we experience. The next generation of designers knows that design is everywhere. Design is for everyone, and I think they are working hard to ensure that solutions can be delivered to other areas as well. The theme of this year’s award is ‘Harmony.’ Harmony means going together and accomplishing all initiatives. We need to think about ways to connect people at various levels and how to resolve conflicting problems to create a sustainable lifestyle.
