About Project

‘Yesultong project ‘ Our belief was that improving the old urban center should stem from a good knowledge of the local site: on its history & background; its development; and on people, industry, geological features. Thus coming up with well-curated contents that harmoniously exist with local architectures was critical in project designing. In this regard, aimless benchmarking and replicating of global success story were something that we refrained from. Therefore, all designs were sketched on-site, and by customizing designs to the sites, we were successful in minimizing the level of site damage. Moreover, we came up with shared & in-depth understanding with the local residents on the purpose of the communication-based site (space) to be introduced, and the role it will play in the future, in advance.

The project site includes the Namhak-dang auditorium, Cocoon Hall multiplex cultural space, and Street Museum – composed of eight distinct and unique museum spaces, where quality paintings, installation artworks, and/or media artworks are exhibited 24/7 throughout the year - which is open to anyone, anytime.

The Street Museum presents itself as one and only museum of its kind, that is paralleled to none in the world. The Yesultong project, which marks the 8th anniversary this year, continues to evolve in scope and depth. Furthermore, the local residents’ enhanced participation hints to the project’s positive outcome and bright future. Another meaningful implication is that the project has brought enhanced communication in the neighborhood, as residents got to know more about their neighbors.

The Street Gardening Program, which could be joined by anyone at ease, has now become a signature resident-led program. Furthermore, more working spaces became available for artists, as buildings and rooftops are provided by the local residents; this reflects residents’ deepened understanding and attention on the arts itself. Connecting with other area to expand beyond local boundaries, as well as content exchanging with others are ongoing initiatives at Yesultong, moving towards our ultimate aim.

Judging Comment

A good example of using participatory art and culture initiatives to trigger a bottom-up community building process.
